Social London Orchestra will be performing Skip Martin’s “Scheherajazz” at the Clapham Grand on Sunday 6th August. This rarely-performed piece, originally put together with the 101 Strings Orchestra and Skip Martin’s Big Band on two separate recording dates, combines the original ballet music of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” with big band interludes written by Martin, one of the foremost arrangers for swing bands and Hollywood films in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
The members of Social London Orchestra will be joined by some of London’s top jazz musicians in what is the first recorded performance of this piece on British soil. This will be the final event of the 2023 Battersea Jazz Festival. The combination of an exciting work, with such a talented group of players, at one of London’s most historic entertainment venues, will make this an unforgettable concert.
